EPIDEMIOLOGY OF DIABETIC COMA IN RUSSIA OVER THE PERIOD 2013-2016

Publication date: 18 may 2018

Aston Health in conjunction with Endocrinology Research Center conducted a large-scale study of diabetic coma epidemiology in adult patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes over the period 2013-2016. The research was ordered by the Ministry of Health.

Despite substantial improvements in diabetes care in the recent years, including better access to state-of-the-art glucose-lowering medications for patients the mortality rate due to diabetic coma remains fairly high.

The clinical characteristics of 10 thousand adult patients with diabetes (> 18 years) were evaluated using the database of the National Registry of Diabetes, which covers 81 regions of Russia.
It was established that the incidence of diabetic coma in 2013-2016 was decreasing steadily - by 1.5 times for T1DM and by 2.5 times for T2DM. It can be suggested that this is the result of the overall improvement in the diabetes care and emergence of novel drug treatments.

The issues that are of the most concern are the increase in the proportion of hypoglycemic comas in both types of diabetes and a high incidence of diabetic coma in patients with T1DM, as well as the increase in the incidence of comas in patients with long-term diabetes. These aspects require special attention on the part of clinicians.

The research was conducted by: A. Mayorov, O. Vikulova, A. Zheleznyakova, M. Isakov, O. Melnikova, I. Kononenko, M. Shestakova and I. Dedov

The National Registry of Diabetes is maintained by the Endocrinology Research Center; the technical support is provided by Aston Health using proprietary technology platform Quinta®. Aston is also responsible for registry user training.
