DIABETES EPIDEMIOLOGY DYNAMICS: 2013-2017

Publication date: 29 march 2018

During the VIII All-Russian Diabetes Congress "Diabetes: 21st Century Pandemia", Aston Health and Endocrinology Research Center presented a review of the National Diabetes Registry. To view the presentation please follow this link.

The report on diabetes epidemiology dynamics became the key reference for majority of speakers at the congress.

Based on the findings from a large-scale observational research*, the patients with diabetes currently comprise 3% of the Russian population (over 90% - T2DM, 6% - T1DM and 2% - other types of diabetes).

Also, the registry data demonstrated:

  • increase in the prevalence of diabetes in all age groups;
  • lower diagnosis rates for T2DM and T1DM;
  • increase in mortality rates for adult patients with diabetes

Another finding showed a stable increase in life expectancy in patients with T2DM as opposed to patients with type 1 diabetes. This trend is indicative of the overall improvement in the quality of diabetes care in Russia.

This on-line patient registry initiated by MoH to study the economic burden of diabetes and its complications now covers 81 out of 85 regions of Russia*, which is about 95% of the country’s territory.

The patient registry is a key tool that provides clinical information to assess epidemiology trends and other important characteristics associated with diabetes. The collected data is used by clinicians and experts for analysis of treatment and prevention practices and developing adequate strategies to handle the disease.

The report was prepared by I. Dedov, M. Shestakova, V. Peterkova, O. Vikulova, A. Zheleznyakova, M. Isakov, D. Laptev, E. Adrianova and T. Shirayeva.

The software for the National Diabetes Registry was developed by Aston Health using proprietary CRM platform (Quinta®). Aston Health is also in charge of technical support of the registry, as well as user support and training.
